Bro. Ernie continues his deep dive into the Book of St. John - get your notebooks and pens ready!

Tables flip, coins scatter, and an entire temple marketplace goes silent, because Jesus refuses to let worship be sold. We open the King James Bible to the Gospel of John 2:13-25 and follow the story of Passover in Jerusalem where merchants, money changers, and religious routine collide with the authority of Christ.

We talk through why Passover is more than a calendar detail and how John uses it to show Jesus fulfilling the Law of Moses while revealing the heart of God. Then we slow down over the cleansing of the temple: why the location matters, what “my Father’s house” means, and how Psalm 69 (“The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up”) frames this moment as prophecy, not just anger. We also wrestle with the leaders’ demand for a sign and Jesus’ shocking reply, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” pointing straight to the resurrection and the “temple” of his body.

From there, we connect the dots to Luke 24, where Christ opens the disciples’ understanding of Scripture, and we press the practical challenge: read the Word for yourself, learn to recognize God’s voice, and don’t confuse spiritual titles with spiritual fruit. The passage closes with a piercing line about belief and motives, reminding us that Jesus knows what is in man and calls us to real faith, not just excitement over miracles.

Welcome And Series Context

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to Simple Simple Simple and Delphi. I'm your host, Sister Diana. So good to have you joining us today. We're continuing our journey into the Gospel of St. John. Brother Ernie's here. How are you doing, brother?

SPEAKER_01

Good morning. I'm doing good.

SPEAKER_02

Mama's here. Hello. Alright, and so we're gonna get going. If you have not listened to the introduction or chapter one, the three parts that we have of that, I encourage you to go there first and then come back to this one. Beautiful story that John has going on talking about the deity of Jesus, and it's just a powerful, powerful book.

SPEAKER_01

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Right. All right. So here we go, brother. And he's gonna continue and take us into the Gospel of St. John, chapter two, part two.

SPEAKER_01

All right. So uh today we'll be reading from the Gospel of St. John, chapter two, verses 13 through 25. And after we have completed the initial reading, then I will come back and read smaller portions and reread it and give you the running commentary. The reason we call it a simple presentation of the Gospel of St. John. So thank you for joining us. I sincerely hope this blesses you. And I would like to say, if this blesses you, what we'd like you to do is share it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Share it to individuals you think might be interested, as well as those you know would be interested, and share it to groups you think might be interested. The reason M3 Ministries is involved in something like this is to get the gospel out to places that they cannot go. So we're getting the word of God out to places that our feet may never tread upon, but the word of God can go there. So, as much as I'm not a technology guy, this is really a good, good thing, and I'm enjoying doing it, and I hope you're enjoying listening. So here we

Reading John 2:13-25

SPEAKER_01

go. We're gonna start reading the Gospel of St. John, chapter 2. We'll be reading verses 13 through 25. I'm reading today from the traditional King James Version of the Bible. So if you use that translation, it will be verbatim the same. If you use another translation, hey, that's okay. We depend upon God for interpretation anyway, right? So here we go. Let me give you a little history of how we got here. Jesus has now acquired five disciples. The first two disciples we mentioned left John the Baptist to follow Jesus. They are Andrew, the brother of Simon, who Jesus would surname Cephas or Peter, and an unnamed disciple. So also pay attention, this is the time now when Andrew brings his brother Peter to meet Jesus. So at this point, Saint John has listed three disciples following Jesus. The day following, Philip, who is from the same town as Andrew and Peter, Bethsaida of Galilee, is called by Jesus to also be his disciple. Philip is so sure after meeting Jesus that he is the Messiah, he finds his friend Nathaniel and tells him all about Jesus. Now, when Jesus meets Nathanael, he calls him an Israelite with genuine integrity. That's what he says. And he says to Nathanael, I saw you when you were under the fig tree. Nathaniel is convinced by this statement that Jesus is the Son of God, the King of Israel. So whatever happened under the fig tree, if it was an hour before, if it was weeks before, or months before, it was so powerful in the life of Nathaniel. Possibly no one else even knew about it. But Jesus put his finger on it. And the fact that Jesus knew all about that was all the evidence Nathaniel needed. Next, Jesus and these five disciples, plus Jesus' mother Mary, and the rest of Jesus' family all attend a wedding in the town of Galilee. There in Cana, Jesus performs his first miracle at this wedding by turning water into wine. We talked about that at length, our last lesson. The wedding servers, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his disciples, are the only people present at the wedding who understand the miracle that has taken place. And really, the scripture doesn't say to us that Jesus told the disciples, so you could say, I'm assuming that, but for sure, after the wedding he told the disciples, because John knew all about it. After the wedding, Jesus and his disciples and his mother and his brothers all go to Capernaum and spend a few days there. Wonder what they talked about during that time. Now we're going to start our reading for today's lesson. Once again, John, the Gospel of St. John, chapter 2, verses 13 through 25. And the Jews' Passover was at hand. And Jesus went up to Jerusalem and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting. And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overthrew the tables, and said unto them that sold doves, take these things hence, make not my father's house and house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten thee up. Then the Jews, I'm sorry, then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building. Now this is in in renovation by Herod the Great. Forty and six years, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spoke of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them, and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had said. Now, when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover in the feast day, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men and needed not that any should testify of man, for he knew what was in man. All

Why Passover Matters To Jesus

SPEAKER_01

right, so let's go back to verse 13, and we'll read a few scriptures and we'll give you our little running commentary, and we're gonna read. We're gonna read verse 13 through 16. 13 through 16. Gotta check my notes here to make sure I don't get off and never land. All right. And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money city. And when he had made a scourge of small courts, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen, and poured out the changers of money, and overthrew the tables, and said unto them that sold doves, take these things hence, make not my father's house and house of merchandise. All right. So if you want to look back at 13 and follow along while we give you the commentary, Saint John wants the readers to understand that Jesus on the feast day, Passover, that Jesus was there. Why is that important? Well, remember, Jesus came to fulfill the law of Moses. So Jesus then would have attended every feast because it was required of every male three times a year to be in Jerusalem and to keep the feast. I don't know why John didn't write about every Passover, but he didn't miss this one. And we'll see why as we go. So we can safely then assume and understand he kept all the law of Moses without fail. Now you can see more about this. Jop this down to read Exodus 12, verses 1 through 27 to understand Passover and Leviticus 23 to get you a little grip about the feast of Israel. Because as you study Scripture, they're going to become very important to you to understand. They were not only ceremonial events, they were historical events, and they were events of prophetic circumstance. Now, why is it that St. John is so specific about the Passover? As you study the Gospels, see if you can determine the significance of the Passover feast in the life of Jesus. Let the word of God become pleasant to you. Enjoy it. Find the mysteries that are there and let them fill your heart with joy.

Merchants And Money Changers In Worship

SPEAKER_01

Now in the temple, when Jesus gets there, there are various merchants. They are there to do business to make a profit. Verse 14, and he found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money, city. And when he did that, he was doing it because he noticed there are people here doing business to make a profit. Now, listen, Jews would come to Jerusalem. Sometimes they needed to purchase a lamb, a ram, a turtle dove when they got there because they were traveling so far they they it was too much to carry their sacrifices there. And so in the law of Moses, you were allowed to appear before the priests and say, I've come and I brought the value of my sacrifice, I'll need to buy one while I'm here. That doesn't mean you get it in the temple. That doesn't mean the temple was a marketplace. They were also told, well, if you don't have the animal, if you bring what the animal is worth, you can give that at the temple, at the tabernacle in the wilderness. Now, there would be Jews then from all over the world who came to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. Many of them would need to purchase animals for various sacrifices. So these merchants saw an opportunity, but they set it up. They set up shop, they set up their business in order to make profit in the temple. So all these Jews from foreign lands also sometimes need to exchange currency with the money changers. These money changers are also there to make a profit off of temple worship. Now, if you've ever traveled from one country to another, when you hit the airport of another country, there's businesses there that exchange money. That is, they sell you their currency at a profit. That's their business. You give them the money from in our case, we have friends in India, Germany, then to Bulgaria. When you go to these places, they usually tell me, don't change your money at the airport because the prices are higher there. We'll take you to the local money exchangers. They do business on a different level. They hope to catch people coming back all the time. Repeat business, and they will treat you differently. So we know what it's like to exchange money. Now, note the reaction when Jesus sees the temple premises being used to make secular profit. Now understand this. When Solomon originally built the temple, there, besides the temple itself, there were several chambers, rooms built adjacent to the temple to facilitate things that needed to be done in the temple, supplies, things that were needed for repair of the temple. It was all there. And in the temple complex was a larger area than the temple itself. And this was made grand by Herod the Great to curry favor with the Jews and to keep them calm, thereby making things easier for him as a person in position supported by the Roman government, exercising their authority. So here in the temple complex, when Jesus sees the premises are used to make secular profit, he's not happy. Also, how many of these merchants and money chambers dealt dishonestly with the worshippers? That's a problem. And how do we know that this happens? Turn to the book of Proverbs with me. We're going to look in Proverbs chapter 11. I want you to see something immediately. Proverbs chapter 11, verse 1. The writer says, A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight. The writer is talking about doing business, having scales, when you're weighing things, gold, silver, grain, these things in order to determine value and equal value. And when they built the scales with the idea that you're not going to be able to see that these scales are crooked, you're not going to know it. But I've schemed it that way. So that when I make exchanges with you, I get pure profit. I can't worry about your loss. You think that was going on with the money changers? You think that was going on with them that bought and sold in the temple? On the temple premises? Somehow it seems in my mind, if they had parked outside the temple premises, just outside the gate, maybe, and if they had been doing square business, been doing business properly, Jesus would not have gone off what looks like the deep end with them because it was in the law of Moses. You could bring money when you need to, or you could exchange your sacrifice for money if you needed to. Look at what happens. Jesus

The Force Behind The Temple Cleansing

SPEAKER_01

had said, You're going to take this stuff. We can easily see what Jesus thought of the situation. How is it that one man with a scourge of small cords was able by himself to be unhindered in overturning the temples of the merchants and the money changers in the temple complex? How many temple guards would have been present to witness this apparently unprovoked attack on these businessmen?

SPEAKER_00

One man losing his temper. How many were in there?

SPEAKER_01

There were sheep, there was cattle, and there were doves. How many were in there? How many tables of money changers? When we read in Acts chapter 2, there were 17 different nations represented at Pentecost. Likely the same number of nations represented at Passover because they're Jews who were scattered all over the world coming to celebrate the feast. So the temple complex, Jerusalem, overflowing with people. There's got to be many temple guards on duty. What was it about this man who was either a carpenter or a builder, probably both, and his rage that held them at bay. None of them. John doesn't write that any of the temple guards, any of the Levites or the priests or the merchants stood up and said, Stop this stuff. Now remember, Jesus being a carpenter, and messianic rabbis teach more appropriately more than a carpenter, possibly working with wood, but more with stone. He was a builder. So he was not a small guy. I don't know how tall he was, but remember he never once used a power tool because they didn't have any.

SPEAKER_00

He did hard work. He did back breaking work. When it was too hot, he started early in the day.

SPEAKER_01

And sometimes he worked because you can't let the sun go down, can't burn daylight. He had projects he had to complete. He must have been a man who was very physically strong, quite possibly very muscular. Remember, he carried the cross beam.

SPEAKER_00

He carried a distance. Now the language that Saint John chose to describe, what was seen, indicates.

SPEAKER_01

Great force and strength was on display. Jesus drove them out of the temple.

SPEAKER_00

He didn't ask them, may I show you the door?

SPEAKER_01

He wasn't leading them to the exit. He wasn't suggesting. He wasn't even ushering. He drove them out of the temple. You remember that God drove Adam and Eve of the garden? Why did he use the word drove? Because they didn't want to leave perfection. And they were going into the unknown. And no doubt they were terrified. And so he drove them out of the garden. I believe these people were terrified by Jesus. That's why they didn't try to stop it. He drove them out of the temple, just like when God drove the man out of the Garden of Eden. I can imagine the voice of Jesus booming out, thundering with eternal power, with earthquaking, heart-shaking power.

SPEAKER_00

And I really think panic ensued.

SPEAKER_01

I think terror froze the temple guards in place as the voice of Jesus filled and reverberated throughout the temple complex. Take these things.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think he just said, please remove these things. Think of a parent who's defending a home and telling someone get out.

SPEAKER_01

Think that your dad is looking at you as a child, and someone is trying to do something in the house that threatens your well-being. What's your dad gonna do? He's gonna eliminate the threat. He's gonna take care of the situation. He's not gonna let I can tell you right now, my daddy wouldn't put up with that, not for half a minute. My father-in-law wouldn't put up with that, not for half a minute. They would have found the exit door abruptly. Jesus drove them out of the temple, telling them, you've turned my father's house into a house of merchandise. In that expression, you know what he is letting loose? You're a bunch of crooks, and you're trying to make money out of God's house. Look, I don't think it's wrong for us church to do a little fundraising in the church for missionaries or for Sunday school kids and for projects. But we want to be careful. We don't ever want to make guests come into church and think, oh, they're here to make money. They're selling all this because this is how they make their living. No, we raise funds for mission. We raise funds to take care of the ministry. We're not here to line our pockets. And if we ever lose track of that, then we need to do something else for fundraising. If we ever forget that this is an effort to support the gospel, and people start taking their cut, their percentage, well, 10%'s got to go to my business, 10%, 15% got to go to my account because I'm putting out this labor. You're turning fundraising into merchandise. And you're spoiling the work of God. We're not going to do that. I just gave you that for free. I won't even take up an offering. How's that? So now we're going to read a

Zeal For God’s House In Psalm 69

SPEAKER_01

little bit further. Let's look at verse 17. And his disciples remembered when Jesus said this, his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten thee up. Where'd they remember that from? Go to the book of Psalms. And we're going to look at Psalm chapter 69. And this is one of the reasons you really want to read, learn to enjoy reading the scripture. Do more than study it. Study it, apply yourself to it, but learn to enjoy it, because then the mysteries begin to unfold. You begin to see prophetic utterances about Jesus. Look, in Psalm 69, I'm going to key on verse 9, but I want to read a little bit. I'm going to start with verse 6, David writing, Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake. Don't let it happen because of me, David said. Let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, because of the things that I have done. O God of Israel, because for thy sake I have borne reproach, in other words, for your reputation. David is saying, Lord, your reputation is at stake in my life.

SPEAKER_00

Isn't that what Jesus is saying?

SPEAKER_01

You're going to read later in this gospel where Jesus says, I am come in my Father's name, and because of that you don't receive me. But if another comes in his own name, you'll receive him. What are they admitting to?

SPEAKER_00

They don't know the name of Jesus' Father. Because they don't know him.

SPEAKER_01

They're looking at the image of the invisible God, of the reflection of the God of eternity. When they see and hear, they see the things Jesus does, they hear the teachings and the preachings that he utters. The God of eternity is being revealed in him, but they don't know. They don't know his image. They don't know his reflection because they don't know his voice. Because they don't listen for him. And they had turned the law almost into an idol. And they had made so many, Jesus said that Pharisees and scribes had made so many additions to the law by their traditions that people could become twofold a child of hell.

SPEAKER_00

Here, they're remembering the Psalms the disciples are.

SPEAKER_01

Shame had covered my face because I was trying to do things right, God, to be the glory of the Lord. Maybe I didn't get it right, so I had to cover my face in shame. Then he says, I am become a stranger unto my brethren. How is it getting prophetic? And an alien unto my mother's children. How is it getting prophetic? Verse 9, for the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. And the reproaches of them, those who disregarded God, who disregarded Jehovah, who disregarded the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the reproaches of them that reproached you, God, that didn't listen to you, God, are falling upon me. They're connecting this with Jesus Christ. Understanding he was ordained from scripture, from the past. Well, he came from eternity, didn't he? From the mind of God. All right, so we're going to continue now. I believe what they heard when Jesus quoted this scripture, I believe they heard the heavenly, righteous rage of the God of eternal judgment. Listen to me, God is love, but you don't want to come in contact with his wrath. God is mercy, more mercy than you can imagine. But you don't want to step under his judgment. Our God is a consuming fire. If you don't have a healthy understanding of what it's like to come under God's judgment, you need to do a more thorough reading of God's word. Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That is understanding. I can't live without you, God, and I do not ever want to experience your judgment. Because it happens, and it's never a sight you want to see. Verse

The Sign Demand And The Temple Saying

SPEAKER_01

18, then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? There's a little indignation here. He's upset their apical. He's embarrassed the temple guards. He shamed the Levites and the priests because none of them stepped up to take control of the situation, though they were the visible authority. The people who sold the animals for sacrifices and the people who exchanged money, you know, the professional businessmen, they could not defend themselves against Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

They were intimidated by him.

SPEAKER_01

And when they finally gathered their wits about him, when it says, then answered the Jews, in my mind, this would be and or the priesthood, the Levites, the Sadducees in the building, the Pharisees, the temple guards, all those who were supposed to be there exercising authority, were intimidated and embarrassed that they didn't do anything. And so they had to take the focus off of themselves. And so they said to Jesus, Who do you think you are doing something like this? You don't have any authority to do this. Show us where you get your authority from. Coming in here, turning, why didn't you stop him? You wouldn't have to be asking this question. You were intimidated into silence, and you were intimidated into motionlessness. You frozen in place and couldn't say anything. Now the Jews, we talked about that being most likely Levites, Pharisees, scribes, guards, they demand from Jesus. You know, I bet they were wishing they could stone Jesus to death. They were wishing they could do something that said, We have authority and power in this situation. But all they could do was John and come lately, ask him, show me a sign. After it was over and done. So Jesus, who is always in control of the moment and understanding the desire of the people, verse 19, Jesus answered and said unto them, destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. He's always in control. He utters those words. This is language that the apostle John understands. Now, a lot of other people don't get it, but John does. Look at the Gospel of St. John, chapter 14. Jump up to chapter 14 with me. And we'll go there and then we'll skip down to verse 10. John is writing down something Jesus has said. Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me. The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself, but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. This prophetic utterance, so powerful, I will raise it up in three days. John is understanding who Jesus is. The apostle Paul also understands this language, even though he probably hadn't read any of these reports yet. It took time to gather all these letters together. Let's look at 2 Corinthians chapter 5. And we're going to look at uh verse 19, 2 Corinthians chapter 5, and we're going to look at verse 19, speaking of Christ to wit, or let me get you to understand to wit that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself. See, the apostles, by the time they're writing their gospels, their understanding things about Jesus, they did not understand before he rose from the dead. So let's go back to the Gospel of St. John again. We'll turn back there. Back into chapter two. I said chapter two. I'm getting used to technology, so put up with me. My wife has encouraged me to do this, and I think she's right. So it's easier for me to see. All right. Back to verse 18 and 19. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. You remember when Jesus said, The Father doeth the works? God was speaking through him. Destroy this temple in three days and I will raise it up. Because God was in Christ. This is going to be revealed more thoroughly as you read through the Gospels and read through the Old Testament and understand prophetic utterances. But it was hidden at that time. That's why they were willing to crucify him. That's why they were willing to argue with him and try to embarrass him. This prophetic utterance was beyond the detractors, even every one of the bystanders, the concept of the mighty God in Christ was not yet plainly revealed or taught. So they could not comprehend that Jesus spoke of the temple of his body. But now when we get to the place where John is writing it down, time has gone by after Jesus' resurrection. Then the disciples remembered when Jesus said this. Then they believed the scriptures. This fact is corroborated in Luke chapter 24.

Resurrection Brings Scripture Into Focus

SPEAKER_01

Let's turn there. And we're going to turn to chapter 24, and we're going to be reading verses 44 through 49. The risen Christ speaking to the disciples. This is what Luke found in his research, some of the last words of Jesus. Jesus speaking, Luke 24 and 44. And he said unto them, he said to the disciples, Jesus, these are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you. That all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the Psalms concerning me. I'm telling you, there's so much joy in finding out how Moses wrote about Jesus in prophetic utterances, how glimpses of the Christ are shown prophetically in word and in deed throughout the Old Testament, what you call the Old Testament. It is the foundation for what we study in the New Testament. And Jesus, some of his last words, hey, the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms, they spoke concerning me. You needed to get it in your heart. Then opened he their understanding. Why'd you do that? Because they didn't understand. They didn't understand all the parables. Could you explain it to us? And Jesus looked at them and said, I'm going to do it, you know. It's given to you to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God. But to them it's not yet. They don't get that, they'll get it someday, but right now it's not given to them. But it's given to you. And then he interpreted the parables for them. Let's continue reading in Luke 24 and 44. Now verse 45. Then opened he their understanding that they might understand the scriptures. Let us pray. God open our understanding that we might understand the scriptures. Years ago, a young man loved God, we were both very young, sat down and said to me one day, He said, You know, Brother Ernie, man of God was preaching the other day, John the Baptist was raised from the dead. Now we're both very young in the Lord, so don't get upset with him. I said, Brother, what do you mean? He says, right here in the scripture, he opened up one of the gospels and he read to me, concerning King Herod, that Herod was looking at Jesus and all he had done after he had John the Baptist executed and his head chopped off. And he heard the stories of Jesus and he said, This is John the Baptist risen from the dead. So I sat with the young man and we read it. And then when he thoroughly understood it, he looked at me and he said, I can't understand. The man of God said that. The man of God preached that. Let me tell you something. Jesus said, if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch. Just because somebody says, I'm an apostle, just because somebody says, I'm a prophet, just because somebody says, I'm an evangelist, I'm a pastor, I'm a teacher, you saying that and claiming it doesn't make it so. When God puts his thumbprint on your life and the church of God can look at you and say, I see that ministry. You won't have to go around ascribing to yourself, I'm an apostle, I'm a prophet. Listen, those ministries, inheriting, receiving, being anointed to one of those ministries is not to become a celebrity, it is to become a servant. A servant to God and a servant to his church and a servant to the lost.

SPEAKER_00

So you just can't, you can't let it go. You gotta read scripture for yourself.

SPEAKER_01

You gotta have a personal relationship with God. You gotta know when the Spirit of the Lord is speaking to you, whether it's a dream, a vision, a scripture that jumps off the page, a testimony somebody gives that burrows its way deep into your soul. A strong impression that drives you to repentance or to a new level of faith, you gotta understand. Jesus said, I'm the good shepherd, and my sheep know my voice. The first and most effective way to get acquainted with the voice of God is to get acquainted with his written word. It helps you develop a sensitivity to the activities of God and then the voice of God. Verse 46. And he said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day. How do you know that? I read it in the law and the prophets and in the Psalms. It's prophesied there, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things, these things that were prophesied. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you, but Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high. After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, John made more sense of these events that happened at Passover and of the things that Jesus said at that Passover and of the things that Jesus did at that Passover. You want to become more familiar with what God is doing in your life. Get familiar with the scripture. Don't make it a labor. Don't do that to yourself. We're gonna close out this here. We're wrapping it up, so stay with me. Stay with me. John also wants us to understand everything this took place during Passover and what that meant in the life of Jesus. Listen

SPEAKER_01

to me. It says that many believed in his name. Right? I'm going back and and and read again. Give me just a moment. Verse 20 then said the Jews, 40 and six years was this temple in the building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spoke of the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered what he said. Because Christ opened their understanding. Verse 21. Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover in the feast day, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles which he did. So Jesus was busy that Passover performing how many miracles we don't know. But so many that when they heard his teaching and saw his miracles, they begin to believe there's power in the name of Jesus. And my friend, that's a must.

SPEAKER_00

That's a must. The Gospel of St. John chapter 1. And we're gonna skip down there.

SPEAKER_01

Verse 12. Concerning the people who received the teaching of Jesus and believed him, they didn't just hear it. They believed, they adhered to his teachings, they followed him. But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God or the children of God, even to them that believe on his name. This is why when we baptize you, it'll be in the name of Jesus. Because the invoking and the evoking of the name of Jesus Christ is a law given by Jesus Himself and reiterated by the apostles in the name of Jesus, the Colossian letter. Whatsoever you do in word or deed, Paul told the Colossian church, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Do it in Jesus' name. Don't forget when you take on the name of Jesus in water baptism, you don't want to take on his name in vain. Everybody thinks that means, oh, just to cuss you. No, no, no. That's a part of it. But it's to take the name of Jesus on your life and then live contrary.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's taking the name of the Lord in vain and ruining the testimony that God is giving you of his goodness and of his grace.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Let's don't do that. Jesus knowing all about humanity. Verse 24, but Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men. The designer and the architect of humanity doesn't need coaching to understand us.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_01

He doesn't need thorough explanation. Verse 25, and needed not that any should testify of man, for he knew what was in man. Jesus is more than secure in who he is, and he requires no confirmation from anyone regarding who they are or his own personal integrity.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So we're going to close out this lesson today.

Final Reflections And Practical Discipleship

SPEAKER_01

Unless you have a comment or or a question, either one of you, or something you noticed.

SPEAKER_02

I do, because I think a lot of people don't know this, but that's not the only time that Jesus was in the temple and took and drew people out. Like I know they show it it's climatic at the end during the the whole Passion Week that he goes in there and does that. But actually, when John is telling it in chapter 2, that's the first time, right?

SPEAKER_01

We we don't know how many times this would have been done. We know that the other writers didn't think it was nearly as important as John did by his description. But he says at the end of his gospel, if everything that Jesus began to do and teach had been written down in a book, yeah, all the books and all the world could not contain. There were so many miracles at this Passover, and I don't know what happened at all the other feasts, but Jesus, being the Jews' Jew, did not fail, therefore, to keep a feast.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's right.

SPEAKER_01

And because of what he did during the feast of Passover, people begin believing in that is they begin evoking the name of Jesus, probably in the sense that did you see what Jesus did? Did you hear what Jesus said? What that crazy man did. Can you imagine the guards trying to explain why they just sat there?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Why they just stood there? A small, a small small course.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

One man. How many money changers were present? The temple complex is pretty big. Pretty big. How many uh people were out there with lambs, goats? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because they said they had to have two pigeons or two pigeons. Come on now. And so, I mean, and then they you can, like you were saying, you can travel with it. So, I mean, you know, they get there and they've got they have to have it.

SPEAKER_01

And provision is made for that. As you read through the book of Leviticus in Deuteronomy, and you see the law laid out, you see where Moses makes provision. If you can't bring your lamb, if you can't bring your ox or whatever it is. When you get and and then, you know, the the tabernacle was at Shiloh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

When you get there, does that mean you walk up and start making money for the priests? That means there were people living around Shiloh besides them. Actually, went to Levites Shiloh.

SPEAKER_02

Actually, went to Shiloh. How awesome was that? It was it it'll change your life. Just to know you're standing right there, you know, on the if we never make Jerusalem.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I will be a little disappointed. But since I'm going to the new Jerusalem, I'm gonna be okay. You're gonna be there because it covers up all amen. Amen. So that that's good observation. Anything from you, Mama?

SPEAKER_02

Not today.

SPEAKER_01

Not today.

SPEAKER_02

Anything else, Diane? No, no, I enjoyed that. I enjoy it very much. It is important.

SPEAKER_01

One of the things I keep pounding on to get into the Word of God for yourself. Read it thoroughly, and read it not only to study, but to enjoy it and digest it. Enjoy it. See you next time.
