Baptizing in Jesus' Name: Why It Matters
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Dive into one of Christianity's most fascinating theological questions: Why do some believers baptize exclusively in Jesus' name rather than using the traditional trinitarian formula? Join Sister Diana as she welcomes ministry veterans Brother Ernie Perez and Brother Mark Ellis for an eye-opening biblical exploration that might challenge everything you thought you knew about baptism.
The conversation starts with Brother Ernie's powerful observation about Matthew 28:18-19—when Jesus declared "All power is given unto me" before commanding baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. This sets the foundation for understanding that Father, Son, and Holy Ghost represent relationships, while Jesus is the name inherited from the Father that carries all authority in heaven and earth.
What makes this discussion particularly compelling is the careful examination of how the apostles themselves interpreted Jesus' command. From Peter's first sermon at Pentecost to Philip's ministry in Samaria and Peter's encounter with Gentiles in Cornelius' house, a clear pattern emerges—every baptism recorded in Acts was performed specifically "in the name of Jesus Christ." As Brother Mark poignantly asks, "Whose blood was shed?" making a powerful connection between baptism, redemption, and the name through which salvation comes.
The theological significance extends far beyond procedural differences. Romans 6 reveals baptism as spiritual burial and resurrection—identification with Christ's death and new life that happens through the power of Jesus' name. This isn't just about getting wet; it's about miracle-working power and spiritual transformation.
Whether you've been baptized, are considering baptism, or simply enjoy theological exploration, this episode offers fresh insights into an ancient practice. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation that approaches a potentially divisive topic with both biblical scholarship and pastoral grace.
I would love your feedback and topic suggestions!

Being a Christian is not always easy, but you are not alone. So grab you a drink, grab you a snack. Let's open the word and see what Jesus has to say today. Hey, welcome to Simple Disappearance, unfiltered. I'm Sister Diana, and I'm happy to have you here with us today, and I am joined by some tremendously anointed men of God. Can we say that?
Speaker 2I know he's laughing, but I can't pat myself on the back, but thank you.
Speaker 1I'll pat it for you. I'll pat it for you, that's okay. Brother, john Ernie Perez is with me today, would you say? Hi, brother.
Speaker 2It's good to be with you, sister, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1Brother Mark Ellis to my right.
Speaker 3It's good to be here today.
Meet Brother Ernie and Mark Ellis
Speaker 1Good to have you, brother. So I've been wanting so much to have you guys join me around the table that we could just talk about various topics, and today I really want us to talk about one of those controversial topics that really shouldn't be about. Why do we baptize in Jesus' name, right? So, brother Ernie, before we get into this very deep topic, why don't you just kind of give us a little background of you, what you've done, and so we kind of know where you're coming from?
Speaker 2Well, I was delivered from my sinful ways August 19, 1971, and I've been living for the Lord ever since.
Speaker 2Along the way I married a fabulous woman, she is fantastic and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Texas Bible College, which at that time was located in Houston, texas, now in Lufkin, texas, owned and operated by the UPCI. I got a good education there. From there, I founded a church, took a couple of small churches and pastored them, took a couple of small churches and pastored them, and then I've worked in ministry as an assistant pastor, as an outreach director, as a Sunday school superintendent, as a youth pastor, as a pastor, as a men's minister. I've just done whatever was asked of me, including clean the restrooms. You serve God. You serve him all the go.
Speaker 2And so I've been serving the Lord since August 19, 1971.
Speaker 1And I'm just so grateful that he saved me. Yeah, me too, me too, me too. So what are you doing right now? What's your focus in ministry right at this moment, because it could ever change.
Speaker 2At this moment, my wife and I have entered into a ministry where you could say we serve as a prophet in six different churches. Yes, we go there as encouragers and intercessors and if they need us to teach, we teach. And we try to meet a couple of times a year with the brethren and talk about all things ministry and help them grow. Our focus is on them growing their ministry and we get to be a part of ministry and help them grow focuses on them growing their ministry and we get to be a part of that and watch them grow. So we're not pastoring and we don't enter into the church as those individual churches, as somebody in charge. We are servants there and a prophet is not a celebrity. A prophet is just another servant and we all have different ways to exercise that calling. So I'm just grateful to be used by God. Now. These are all new works.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2And it's an honor for people to allow me to serve in this capacity.
Speaker 1Right, right, I know we're grateful to have you, the both of you I mean Sister Patty and you both are just mentors in the faith to many of us. So we're so grateful to have your covering for us and for M3 Ministries. It's just imperative, I think, to what we do and, even though you don't claim it, I feel like you have an apostolic anointing, but nevertheless I'm going to turn you off. To my right is just a real dear friend. He is just coming to my library. Ernie um introduces and we began to work on this e3 school of ministries thing. And you're just so, you just have that wisdom of the lord to just know about certain things. I'm so grateful to have you here. Brother mark ellis, will you just tell us a little bit about what you do, what you've been through, what you do, what you're doing?
Speaker 3now. Well, I started off. I received the Holy Ghost when I was only seven years old and I'm a human being. I can't say it's been a perfect life, but God has been good. I went to Bible college also. That's where Brother Ernie and I met, got acquainted and been friends for years. I have served in, like Ernie, every capacity imaginable worship leader, choir director, sunday school superintendent, bus ministry director.
Speaker 1They had you everywhere.
Speaker 3Yeah, I've taught Sunday school everything.
Speaker 1You drove the bus.
Speaker 3I've driven the bus. I drove the bus when the brakes went out. And I've taught juniors up through the adult seniors all the way in every group. I've served for many, many years as assistant pastor in multiple churches. The last previous church I was at, I was there for 25 years as the assistant pastor.
Speaker 3I've been currently at the church that I'm serving now for two years as assistant pastor my ministry. At this point in my life, when I left that last church, I was praying about what God wanted me to do and I felt very strongly he wanted me to help small churches to be an encouragement and help to pastors of small churches, because that's where I grew up.
Speaker 3my father was a pastor, always was with small churches, and so I knew the issues and the things that faced those ministries. And so for the last two years I I've been with Pastor Myron Jones and you know we're fixing to celebrate our four-year anniversary and I've been with him the last two years approximately.
Speaker 1Nice, nice, well, thank you so much for being with us today. Thank you, brother Ernie. All right, so let's jump on into this really deep subject, right? Because you know a lot of people. Um, they just don't believe in baptizing if you don't baptize name of the father, son and the holy spirit. Um, we're at the, you know, as we're sojourners in our place where we're meeting, we, we kind of go church to church and place to place, and so, um, the one that we're currently at, they did their baptisms a couple of weeks ago and they were adamant. The pastor is like you know, you're not one of those in Jesus' name, only are you. And I said, well, actually I didn't used to be, but I've been delivered, and so, anyway, they still did it in the way that they learned, and they did it. But can you give us some you guys, give us some information, give us scripture to support. Why do we believe that in the new covenant, in the new church, in what we're doing now, that we baptize in Jesus' name?
Speaker 2Well, the first thing I would say is it's per the instruction of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we should look at a couple of the Gospels, at Matthew and Mark in particular, regarding water baptism, and then we should take a look into the book of Acts and see how they follow the commands of Jesus. With Jesus, water baptism was not a suggestion, am I right, pastor Mark? That's correct. If you want to look quickly at Matthew, chapter 28, this is familiar to just about anybody. In the faith, jesus has appeared to the disciples and this is Matthew's memory, the way he writes it, how it impacted him. Verse 18, and Jesus came and spake unto them saying Now these are his last words. According to Matthew, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Catch that statement. If I have all the water in this room, in this bottle, then there's no water anyplace else. If Jesus has all power, there's no power anyplace else. It's resident in and working through him. We know god fills all time and space, but the revelation of god's power. Jesus says that's right here in me, all power is given unto me in heaven and earth. And then, verse 19, he says because of go. Ye, therefore, because all power is in me. You go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
Speaker 2Now, marcus is my longtime friend, he's my longtime brother. I call him brother, that's his name. His wife calls him. Hey, you On a good day. And if somebody say, who's that? That's my husband. And if we were to talk to Allie, she would say that's my dad and she'd call him dad, dad and those are all names for him, as in monikers that have to do with relationship and being identified by relationship such as it is here, because the command is to baptize in the name of the father. That belonged. The name that belongs to the father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost is not saying repeat these words when you perform baptism. Now I'll let Mark talk and then I'll chime in.
Speaker 3Well, you're absolutely right. It says baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. The easy one there is, everybody is going to agree the name of the Son is Jesus. Jesus said I come in my Father's name. So there you go, you've got the two attached together. And then he says when I leave, I'm not going to leave you comfortless, I'm going to send you comfort, I will come again to you. So when you see that differentiation, if you will, that same line. So it's all connected back to Jesus.
Speaker 3And one of the things several years ago I read in a book, just like boom, the light went off in my head and this fellow was discussing baptism in the name of Jesus. He said whose blood was shed, and the blood that was shed was Jesus' blood. If we're going to be covered in the blood, shouldn't we call his name in baptism? Because that represents being washed in the blood in remission. So it just connects together. And I taught a new conference class, basically at the previous church and the church I'm in now and one of the things that people would come in and would ask I had one lady specifically ask me well, how do you baptize. And I said well, here we baptize in the name of Jesus. She said do you mean I'm not going to be saved because I baptized in the name of the Father, son and the Holy Ghost? I said I'm not telling you that, I'm telling you we baptize in the name of Jesus. And it wasn't but six weeks later she was getting baptized in the name of Jesus baptized.
Speaker 3I'm not condemning anybody that baptizes a different way. This is how I baptize. I will welcome anybody. If I was a pastor, I'd welcome anybody into my church that had been baptized in the name of the Father, son and the Holy Ghost. I'm going to teach the way I teach and if God opens something up to their heart and mind that they want to be done differently, then they're welcome to do that. But I'm not going to insist on it.
Speaker 2What you said about the statement Jesus said I'm coming in my Father's name. This is from the Gospel of St John. If another were to come in his own name, him you would receive. The name of the Lord was a mystery in the Old Testament. He was always known by relationships I'm the God who heals, I'm the God who hears, I'm the Almighty, I'm the Great, I Am, etc. But Jesus saying I'm coming in my Father's name when they did not have a name for the Father, was a bold statement. And Paul in the book of Hebrews if you're listening and you have your Bible, if you turn to Hebrews, chapter 1, I'm going to launch off on what Pastor Mark noted, how that Jesus said I'm come in my Father's name. That's an important situation.
Speaker 2I'm reading from Hebrews 1, the very first verse. I'll begin and I'll quit at verse 4. God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. That means God is speaking to us through his only begotten Son, jesus. Right, god fills all time and space. How could we see him if he didn't reveal himself to us through his son, jesus, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. Then. Speaking of Jesus now, who, being the brightness of his glory, god's glory, and the express image of his person, the person of the God of Abraham, isaac and Jacob, is revealed in Jesus Christ and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high, being made so much better than the angels. This is important, talking about Jesus as he hath, by inheritance, obtained a more excellent name than any angel.
Historical Examples of Jesus' Name Baptism
Speaker 2Something happened to Jesus. He inherited the name Yeshua and it was prevalent throughout the Old Testament. But they didn't understand that the name would be applicable to the God of Abraham, isaac and Jacob and, as a matter of fact, whenever they asked to know God's name, you know, jacob asked to know God's name and the Lord said don't ask me that. Manoah Samson's father said we want to know your name. God said you don't get to know my name, it's a secret. As a matter of fact, in Proverbs, chapter 30, you know you can't put a nickel in my ear and not expect to hear the conversation, but let's look in Proverbs 30 for a moment. There is a prophet here who's having to defend himself and looking at just the first few verses here. And let's look at what's written the words of Agur, the son of Jacob. Even the prophecy. The man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Uchah. So the words of Agur. Agur is the son of Jacob, agur is a prophet and he's declaring I gave some prophetic words, verse 2,. He says Surely, I am more brutish than any man and have not the understanding of a man. I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy. I didn't go to the school of prophets. Okay, I'm not one of the elite, yet my calling stands. Then he goes on to say he's offending himself. Who has ascended up into heaven or descended, who has gathered the wind in his fist? We know who. That is right. That's only God who has bound the waters in a garment that's God is right. That's only god who hath bound the waters in a garment. That's god who has established all the ends of the earth. That's god. What is his name? Because he was el shaddai. He was jehovah rafa. He was jehovah jireh. All names were relative to his experience with people. What did he say to Jacob I'm the God of your father, abraham and Isaac. To Moses, I'm the God of your fathers, abraham, isaac and Jacob. And when Moses asked for a name, he didn't get it. But Jesus said I'm coming in my father's name. And the writer of the Hebrews said he inherited his name. And the prophet said if you're so close to God, he said to the Old Testament prophets, can you tell me his name? And then he dropped a real bomb. And what does his son say? He didn't have a son. He had Adam, the created son. Israel was his adopted son, but Jesus is the only begotten son and his name was inherited from the father.
Speaker 2Now, mark, what is it in the gospel of St Luke that says that the angel told Mary you will be overshadowed by the most high. Isn't that another way of saying the Holy Ghost will overshadow you? Yes, so that means the Holy Ghost is the Father, because the Holy Ghost overshadowed her and she conceived. So here we have, in Matthew, jesus relating to the disciples, just like it was done in the Old Testament, using relational expression. He's a father in creation, he's in the Son in our redemption, and he reveals himself to us in our lives individually as the Holy Ghost, but it's the same God. Just like Mark is a husband, mark is a dad and Mark is a son, but culturally that's not how we do things and why we know that the correct interpretation of this is to baptize in the name of Jesus. I bet you, mark, can get there before I can quote it Acts, chapter 2.
Speaker 3I got it. He's already there, you see there.
Speaker 2I will say this Peter's first sermon. The people who heard it believed with their heart and confessed with their mouth. When did they do that? They did that in verse 37. Peter's sermon was finished and the scripture says now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart. They believed in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, shall we do? They confessed with their mouth. I'm in trouble. I need this Jesus.
Speaker 3That's right. And Peter responded. He said repent and be baptized in the name, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins.
Speaker 2I think we should remember, Mark, that Peter suggested water baptism.
Speaker 3I don't think so.
Speaker 2That wasn't a suggestion.
Speaker 3No sir.
Speaker 2Maybe we better read that again.
Speaker 3He said be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins.
Speaker 2Are you sure he didn't ask them? Would you like to be baptized? I don't see that For your public profession of faith. Did he say this is your public profession of faith.
Speaker 3They had already professed.
Speaker 2When they said, men and brethren, what shall we do? They professed their faith and gave evidence that they believed with their heart. And they said now, what do we do?
Speaker 1And so Peter said let me give you some options I don't think peter was an option guy, you know just well in matthew 28 did.
Speaker 2Did jesus give an option? He said no. Do this? Make disciples, baptize them in the name. That was a command. He gave the same command in mark 16 when he said go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He didn't say and if you would like to be baptized, and those who choose to be baptized, and some will go ahead and be baptized. It's important. I believe we can. All three of us can agree. It's important that we, if we are the New Testament church, that we strive to imitate the church that is in the book of Acts.
Speaker 1Yes. That's right, yes so.
Speaker 2Matthew was there when Peter was preaching, wasn't he? Yes, he was, and the other apostles were there, right, yes, how come somebody didn't jump up and down and say no, no, no, no, say Father, son and Holy Ghost. It's not because those there's nothing wrong with those terms, they express relationship with God that we have Various relationships. Just like the church is the bride of Christ, the church is the servant of Christ, the church is the adopted child of Christ. But those names happen to do with our relationship with God.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2The name of Jesus is the name that he inherited from his father. That's right, he inherited it. Where did you get the last name, mark Ellis? Where did you get that name From my father? Inherited from his father. So that's the first example of water baptism in the book of Acts. What's the next one, pastor Mark?
Speaker 3Well, I was thinking about chapter 10. Chapter 10?.
Speaker 2That may not be the second one, but Okay, let's go with the one in chapter 10.
Speaker 3Okay, let's go with the one in chapter 10. This is when Peter went to the Gentiles and took the message beyond just the Jews.
Speaker 1Yes To us To us yes.
Speaker 2Brought it to us.
Speaker 3Brought the message to us and, of course, he went through his vision and everything. And he finally gets the idea and when Cornelius' people show up at his house he says, okay, I'll go with you. And he took people with him. And so they get to Cornelius' house and he begins to preach. Let's see dropping down to. We're in 10th chapter, verse 34.
Speaker 3Peter opened his mouth and said of truth, I perceive that God is no respecter of persons. In other words, he's going to give you this same spirit, this same God that we've experienced is now for you, but in every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness, he that accepteth with him the word which God sent unto the children of Israel preaching peace by Jesus, he is the Lord of all. That word I say unto you, which was published throughout all of Judea and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached yes, he's referring all the way back to John the Baptist baptized him and said but there's someone coming after me whose shoes I'm not worthy to bear, and he's going to baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.
Speaker 1Fire yes.
Baptism as Spiritual Rebirth and Resurrection
Speaker 3And now God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil, and God was with him. We're witnesses of all these things that he did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they slew and hung on the tree. Him God raised up on the third day. So he's preaching this whole story, the gospel, not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us who did eat and drink with him, after he rose from the dead and he commanded us to preach unto the people and to testify that it is he which ordained of God to do the judge of the quick and the dead. He's talking about what he said in Matthew 28. He's talking about what he said in Matthew 28. Pardon me To give all the prophets witness that through his name, there it is.
Speaker 3Through his name.
Speaker 1Come on.
Speaker 3The name of Jesus. Whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sin. Where do we receive remission of sin? Where do we receive remission of sin? Why did Peter say be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission?
Speaker 2of your sins. Yeah, no, repentance is what we do, but remission of sins is what God takes care of yes Through his blood.
Speaker 3While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on them. Which heard the word they of the circumcision, which believed, were astonished as many as came with Peter. They heard him because they began to speak in other tongues. And verse 47 can any man forbid water? That these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost. He commanded them to be baptized. No, no, no, he suggested.
Speaker 2No, he commanded no, he gave the option. He commanded no believer's baptism. What other kind of baptism is there than believer's?
Speaker 3baptism. Nothing light about this. He commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. And what name is that? Jesus?
Speaker 2That's great. Let's look at Acts, chapter 8, real quick.
Speaker 1Real quick because he's got to tap out. Yeah, I know.
Speaker 2If you have to leave, Mark, we'll finish up. We'll finish up.
Speaker 3I'm sorry, but I do need to leave. I promised my wife I'd be back to pick her up.
Speaker 2Well, it's important that she doesn't call you, hey you, so you might want to go get her.
Speaker 3I appreciate the opportunity to participate for a short time.
Speaker 1Yes, we're going to have you back. We're going to have you back.
Speaker 2All right. Jumping back into Acts, chapter 8, here's what we're seeing Philip the evangelist goes to samaria and begins to preach the gospel. And the people believe him. Concerning the kingdom of god, what he preaches and and we're looking at, we'll say six and the people, with one accord, gave heed unto those things which Philip preached. Seeing the miracles which he did, how did Mark write that miracles would be done? Jesus prophesied in Mark 16 and said in my name, you shall lay hands on the sick, they shall recover. You speak with new tongues. These things will happen. How? In my name, in the name of Jesus. So how did these miracles then have to happen? If they're in obedience to Jesus, the miracles had to happen in the name of Jesus. Now we find there was great joy in the city. You get down to verse 12. And here Luke writes something interesting. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ?
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2They were baptized, both men and women. When were they baptized? When they believed the things Philip was preaching about the kingdom of God and about the name of Jesus Christ. There was some authority in that name, there was some power in that name that made them say I want to be baptized. I will submit to that. Verse 14 says Now, when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent it to them, peter and John, who, when they were come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. They weren't satisfied that they had been baptized. That was great. But they said y'all supposed to be receiving the Holy Ghost? Yeah, so they sent prayer assistance. Then verse 16 says for as yet he was fallen upon, none of them. Only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, yeah, Wow. I asked for just a little bit and then you just threw me this big old cake out there. I thought we were going to get a slice.
Speaker 2Well, I got another piece of cake for you here. I don't know, you need to have one more piece. One more piece, one more piece. Go ahead. You need to get it from Romans, chapter 6.
Speaker 1Yeah, we've been in Romans a lot lately, haven't we?
Speaker 2Romans, chapter 6.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I'm going to read just a few verses, because I know we've got to wind this down. What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin? That grace may abound, god forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? What do you do with dead people? You bury them.
Speaker 2Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, into his identity? We were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death. That's a miracle. Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism unto death. Are we going back in time? The writer says we are. Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father. Even so, we also should walk in the newness of life Verse 5, for if we have been planted together in the newness of life Verse 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, that's, being buried with him in baptism, we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection. How is that kind of miracle going to take place without the name of Jesus? Right, right. Everything that is miraculous comes in the name of Jesus. Wow, if water baptism is comes in the name of Jesus, if water baptism is more than getting wet.
Speaker 1Yeah, and I would love for us to get into that topic. We just Sister Audie and I did a podcast, I think, a couple weeks ago, and we were talking about baptism and the necessity of baptism and it not being just an option. You know that's given and it not being just an option. That's given, but what happens in the water is so much more than what we give it credit for, right. I think that, just like Abraham, his men of his tribe had to be circumcised, no matter what age, we have to be circumcised in that water and we can go all over the place.
Speaker 2The Colossian letter tells us that water baptism is New Testament circumcision.
Speaker 1Yes, yes, yes, that's what I said. There's just so much that happens there, brother. Thank you so much.
Speaker 1We're going to be doing a lot more podcasts together and I'm grateful for that. And and if you have not began this study with us on the simple presentation of the book of acts, uh, brother ernie is uh leading that for us and you can find that on this podcast platform. Uh.
